All three levels of Madisonville football gathered at Mustang Stadium on Friday night for their first live action of the season.
The Mustangs welcomed Fairfield and Rudder for the preseason scrimmage.
Each unit faced each other in the three-way scrimmage. The Mustangs got a chance to see where they stood on both sides of the ball against both visiting opponents.
“I thought we moved the ball well offensively,” said head coach Rusty Nail on the Varsity scrimmage. “The line blocked well for the most part and the running backs worked hard and did a good job getting downhill.”
The Mustangs got a good look at where they stand in all aspects of the offense. Quarterback Ben Phillips led the charge through the air as he prepares for his senior season.
“I thought Ben threw the ball extremely well,” said Nail. “Outside of three drops, two of which came in the end zone, there were several nice catches from our receivers to help him out.”
Nail was also pleased with his defensive line and their ability to disrupt the line of scrimmage against both opponents. There was still room to improve with the unit overall as they gave up a couple of deep balls.
“Our effort was good but there were a few things we need to work on,” said Nail. “The biggest things that stood out to me was covering the deep ball, catching the deep ball and finishing tackles. There were several times we failed to bring down the opposing ball carrier after contact at or near the line of scrimmage.”
The Mustangs will travel to Cameron Yoe on Friday night for their second and final scrimmage before the regular season gets under way on Sept. 1.
Cameron Yoe was picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas football magazine to finish first in their district again this season. Last year, the Yoemen were regional finalists.
“Cameron will be as good or better than anyone we play on our regular season schedule,” said Nail on his next opponent. “It should give us a good gauge for where we are heading into week 1.”
The final Madisonville scrimmage will also involve varsity and both JV squads and will take place in Cameron on Friday at 5 p.m. The Mustangs will open the regular season at home against Diboll the following Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
