LUFKIN — The Mustang basketball team ended its season Friday night with a 22-7 record and bragging rights as the home of the district MVP.

Senior Jawan Lewis led the team and earned the title of the district’s most valuable player. R’Kelian Wiley, Sam Bennett and Tommy Holiday were named to first team All-District, while Kasey Williamson, Cornelius Merchant and Deonte McAdams were named to second team. Dru’Paul Merchant and Keion Salas were honorable mentions. Bennett, Williamson, Holiday and Dru’Paul Merchant were named to the All-District Academic Team.

The Mustangs played Center for the area championship at Panther Gym in Lufkin on Friday.

Madisonville outscored the Roughriders in the second and third quarters, but were outmatched by a team that hit several three-pointers and played an aggressive game. The final score was 72-57, with MVP Lewis scoring 18 points and nabbing eight rebounds.

Head Coach Brian Thurmond noted that he is “very proud of this team” and looking forward to next season.

“It was a good season,” Thurmond said Monday. “It was refreshing to coach this team. We had great senior leadership and the young guys stepped up. We have a chance to be really good next year. Nine out of 10 guys made All-District.”
