Struggling to score runs in Tuesday’s home loss against Athens 3-1, the offense for the Madisonville baseball team came to life on Friday, against Mexia.
Managing just one run in their previous game the Mustangs racked up nine runs against the Black Cats, defeating Mexia 9-2.
“I thought our bats cooled off against Athens, but we were able to get back to our game on the road against Mexia,” said Madisonville coach Keith Sitton. “We made plays when we had to. Sam Bennett and Darrren Blakley led the team offensively; contributing two hits each, with three doubles. Ben Phillips also had a critical, bases clearing, triple.”
Madisonville’s Bryce Bennett pitched a complete game surrendering one hit and striking out 10.
“I thought [Bryce] had an exceptional night on the mound,” Sitton said. “He pitched great!”
Madisonville led 3-2 after the second inning, keeping Mexia scoreless for the remainder of the game as the Mustangs scored one run in the sixth and five runs in the seventh inning, sealing the win.
“We were very solid up and down the order,” added Sitton. “We are still working on our tournament form at the plate but this was definitely a good start.”
Madisonville (15-4) will host Navasota Friday at Mustang Ballpark. Opening pitch is set for 7 p.m.
