Mustangs second in district

The Mustang basketball team is “battle tested” and ranked second in District 18-4A, after a win over Groesbeck on Friday.

The team is 5-2 in district and 20-7 overall. The boys hosted No. 1 Mexia on Tuesday in their final game before the playoffs.

“I feel we are battle tested,” Head Coach Brian Thurmond said. “We have been able to handle adversity all year and overcome situations to come back and win and close out games.”

Trailing Mexia and Madisonville in district are Fairfield (3-4), Groesbeck (2-5) and Palestine (2-5).

The Mustangs outscored Groesbeck 62-57 last week, with senior powerhouse Jawan Lewis scoring 16 points. Sophomore Sam Bennett contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds. Madisonville had a strong lead going into the second half but Groesbeck fought back, scoring 20 and 24 points in the third and fourth quarters. It wasn’t enough for the win, and the Mustangs got the victory.

But Madisonville lost a tough game to Fairfield earlier in the week, 54-52.

Seniors R’Kelian Wiley and Lewis scored nine points each, while Deonte McAdams had 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
