Mustangs split games

When the Mustangs approached the plate Tuesday afternoon, they were determined to make every at-bat count early and often.

Four hits from Sam Bennett helped Madisonville defeat Fairfield 12-1.

Bennett singled in the first, singled in the second, singled in the third, and doubled in the fourth. Darren Blakley led off the game with a single with two outs in the first inning. Fairfield tied things up in the second inning, but Madisonville secured the victory thanks to eight runs in the third.

The Mustangs scored on a single by Corey Shuck, a single by Kasey Williamson, a single by Ben Phillips, a wild pitch, and a single my Matt Rudis.

Bryce Bennett earned the win for the Mustangs. Bennett pitched three innings, giving up one run, two hits, striking out five, and walking one. Williamson recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Madisonville.

The Mustangs couldn’t sustain its momentum falling to Athens Friday, 5-1.

Athens took an early 3-0 lead after Emanuel Hernandez drove in two, when he homered in the first inning. Hernandez earned the win for Athens pitching seven innings, surrendering one run, two hits, and striking out six.

Rudis took the loss for the Mustangs pitching six innings, surrendering five runs, four hits, and striking out seven. Bennett and Hudson each collected one hit to lead Madisonville’s offense.

“We struggled to find consistency at the plate,” said coach Sitton. “We did a better job against Fairfield but Athens was a different story. They did a good job of preparing for us and pitched well against us.”

The Mustangs (18-5) return to the mound Thursday, on the road in Palestine. Opening pitch is set for 8 p.m.
