Mustangs win third straight

If you told the Madisonville faithful that their Mustangs would produce nearly 50 points on the night when there were 8 minutes to play in the first half, they might’ve called you crazy. Then again, 49 points in 32 minutes probably qualifies as such.

“It started out ugly and it ended ugly,” said head Mustang football coach Rusty Nail to his team after their 49-32 victory over Caldwell. “You guys played well enough in between to pick up this victory.”

Ugly is right. Nothing went well for the Mustangs in the opening quarter. They found themselves trailing the Hornets 6-0 and came up empty on two possessions deep in enemy territory.

Then, just like that, they exploded.

Quarterback Ben Phillips put Madisonville on the board with a long touchdown scamper and found Kendell Moffett wide open down the field on the very next possession to put the Mustangs up for good. In between, the defense stuffed star Hornet Dominique Chambers on fourth down backed up against their end zone to afford the offense the opportunity.

“We were able to execute and keep it going throughout the night,” said Phillips. “We just need to keep riding the wave and keep everyone motivated.”

Also exploding on the night was senior Johnny Simpson. Simpson found the end zone on three separate occasions, including an impressive punt return on a bouncing kick.

“We didn’t really come out with great intensity in the first half,” said Simpson. “I asked our guys if we could show better intensity and they came up big time. I couldn’t have done anything tonight without my teammates.”

A Caldwell resurgence late in the game allowed them to post over 30 points, but the Mustang defense was stingier than the final numbers will indicate. The unit produced multiple turnovers for the third straight week and kept the Hornets at bay when it mattered most.

The Mustangs will go for their fourth straight win next week when they travel to Crockett. It will be the second road contest of the season for Madisonville and will begin at 7:30.
