The Mustang basketball team continues its winning streak, barely edging by Fairfield in the final seconds of an exciting Friday night home game.
The boys are now 2-0 in district and 17-5 overall.
Madisonville was down by a point with the clock running out when Jawan Lewis passed to senior guard Dru’Paul Merchant with four seconds remaining on the clock. Merchant sunk a three-pointer, bringing the crowd to its feet.
Fairfield then committed a violation and Madisonville’s Sam Bennett scored a free throw, bringing the final score to 56-53.
Lewis is making the most of his senior season, scoring 25 points in Friday’s game, with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Head Coach Brian Thurmond noted after the game, however, that all nine starters contributed big plays.
“It was a hard-fought team win,” Thurmond said. “We need to play better defense all 32 minutes, cut down the unforced turnovers and make better decisions. Overall the whole team played their roles. It’s one day at a time and we get better every day.”
The Mustangs faced 0-2 Groesbeck on Tuesday and play at Mexia on Friday night.
