The Mustang basketball team climbed to 3-1 in district play last week with a close win over Groesbeck and a tough loss to Mexia.

The team is now 18-6 overall.

Madisonville fell to Mexia on Friday, racking up the first loss in district action. Jawan Lewis had 22 points, four assists, six rebounds and three steals, while R’Kelian Wiley had eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

Madisonville struggled against the Groesbeck Goats on Jan. 26 and remained neck and neck throughout the game. Lewis’ 20 points and numerous rebounds from sophomores Tommy Holiday and Anthony Morning kept the Mustangs in the game, and they ultimately pulled out a 69-67 victory.

“The kids really do appreciate the large Madisonville crowd and the positive support,” Head Coach Brian Thurmond said.

The Mustangs hosted Palestine on Tuesday and travel to Fairfield on Feb. 9.
