A nine-year-old plan has come full circle, and the Mallet brothers have opened a restaurant in Madisonville.
Manager/owner Greg Mallett said he and his brother Chad have had a restaurant in Navasota for eight years, but really looked at Madisonville first.
“We originally, 9 years ago, considered purchasing the land that Atkinson Toyota now sits on,” Mallett said. “That fell through, so we looked around for other areas and landed in Navasota.
A couple of years later, we opened up in Iola, which is our home town.”
Once the Iola restaurant became established, the duo took their catering trailer out to area towns.
“People showed more interest here, so we just stayed here five days a week,” he said. “Then it just happened — we were looking to broaden our horizons here.”
The restaurant now is open at 3303 E. Main St. across from Buc-ee’s.
The original Mallett Brothers was started by the brothers’ grandfather and great uncle back in the 1940s, and lasted through 1980. Greg said that’s where he and his brother Chad developed a love for cooking.
“We were throwing parties and weekend events, which is where the restaurants got started,” he said. “One day, we woke up and said let’s try it out.”
Mallett said the restaurant’s appeal has its roots in many things.
“We’re local, which is a big part of the draw, and we offer more than just barbecue,” he said. “We have burgers, chicken fried steaks, and even catfish. What sets us apart is the consistency and the pride we put into it. You come in one day, and it will be the same the next day.
“We’re here to stay, and hopefully we’ll outgrow this and have to build a bigger establishment in a few years,” he said.
