The North Zulch boys’ basketball team opened the season on Friday with a 52-46 loss to the Eustace Bulldogs. North Zulch managed to keep the game within reach heading into halftime down only one point, 26-25, but a poor shooting third quarter cost North Zulch the momentum and ultimately the game, with Eustace outscoring North Zulch in the third 14-7.
“We missed a lot of shots, layups and open three-pointers,” said Head Coach David Graves after the loss. “We did everything we wanted; we just missed a lot of shots in the third quarter. That really hurt us.”
Despite the third quarter scoring lull Coach Graves was pleased with the way his guys controlled the tempo and crashed the backboards.
“I thought we scored a lot in transition,” Graves said. “Our defense was able to force 13 turnovers and scoring off turnovers is what we want to do.”
Juniors Gerhart Wiese and Tye Douga led the team in scoring and rebounding as both recorded their first double-doubles of the season. Wiese led the way with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Douga had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Trey Crocker had 12 points and dished out six assists in the loss.
Although the Bulldogs didn’t start the season the way they had hoped, Coach Graves said he believes the defeat will motivate the guys to push harder.
“We love the challenge of getting better each day,” he said. “We still have one goal and nothing will change that.”
