North Zulch hits stride

BRYAN — The North Zulch Bulldogs rolled through last week with two dominate wins.

The Bulldogs played at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bryan last Tuesday and took down the Eagles, 52-25. The Bulldogs did not rest on their laurels, though, as they hosted the Thrall Tigers, and the domination continued with a 66-33 victory.

Head coach David Graves was understandably excited for his team.

“We are getting better with each game and every practice,” he said. “I am very proud of all them. They mean a lot to me, and they work harder and harder each day.”

At the St. Joseph’s game, the Bulldogs led from the tipoff and never took their foot off the gas. Gerhart Wiese was the leading scorer for North Zulch with 25 points, almost half that of the entire team.

The Bulldogs defended their home pine against the Tigers with another decisive victory. North Zulch was in control of the game from the starting whistle to the last. Michael Harris led the team in scoring with 20 points.

The boys are great at scoring, but their defensive effort doesn’t always show in the box scores. The Bulldogs are learning team defense, and they stacked up blocks and steals against the Tigers.

The Bulldogs have height, and took advantage of that mismatch. North Zulch defended the paint and forced Thrall to beat them with shooting. The Tigers could not overcome the defense.

With district play starting soon, Coach Graves wants to have his boys ready “To be comfortable with being uncomfortable, and handle different aspects of the game as it is thrown at us.”

The Bulldogs will return to the court to keep their win streak alive at the Buffalo Tournament on Dec. 28-30.
