North Zulch looks to solidify playoff spot

The North Zulch volleyball team split a pair of crucial games this week and currently sit tied for the final playoff slot from their district.

If the Bulldogs win their final three games of the regular season, they will be tied for third place with Normangee and qualify for the postseason.

“We don’t see the end of the season as high pressure,” said North Zulch volleyball coach Kim Branch. “We’re fully focused on playing our game and finding a spot in the playoffs. These players are fully capable of doing just that.”

The Bulldogs righted the ship on Friday night against Latexo after dropping a match to Iola in straight sets on Tuesday. Both of the district contests took place in North Zulch.

As expected, seniors Sally Osth and Emma Baker played steady and consistent games. But former JV squad members Madison Murphy and Dannicka Diserens made some key plays after they were called up. Coach Branch has praised her team’s ability to work on consistency and play every point with intensity and energy.

North Zulch took on Kennard on the road last night but will finish the season off with two straight home games.

“We are confident in the position we are in,” said Branch. “We just need to take care of business in every game and have some things fall our way.”

The pressure will be on the Bulldogs as they have a fine opportunity to make the postseason, but seem to be in a good place as a group. Branch is confident in her team’s ability to accomplish their goals and take the next step.

“There is no stopping us when we are at our best,” said Branch. “We know what are goals are and we haven’t lost sight of them. There’s a lot of excitement right now and I can’t wait to see what we are truly capable of.”

Before North Zulch can try and realize their playoff aspirations, they will have to take care of business over the last week of the season. Last night’s trip to Kennard was the final road game of the regular season. Lovelady will be in North Zulch on Friday night. The JV squads will faceoff at 4 p.m. immediately followed by Varsity at 5.

The regular season concludes the following Tuesday when the Bulldogs host Grapeland. JV will begin at 5 p.m. followed by Varsity at 6.
