Marshall Earnhart says he’s “not surprised at all” that the North Zulch Lady Bulldogs are district champions.
“This was always going to be the year for them,” the head coach and athletic director said Tuesday. “We’re leaving it all out on the court. Hopefully I’ve taught them more than the game of basketball but some life lessons, too.”
Seniors Kyela Cosby, Kiera Cosby and Mackenzie Horn graduate this year but Earnhart said he’s been playing junior varsity athletes and believes the team is gaining some experience.
“I’ve asked them to step up,” he said. “The JV girls we’ve brought up have worked hard and are putting in the same amount of practice. They’re just as important as the starters. They’re a big part of the program.”
The Lady Bulldogs played Tuesday night against Apple Springs in Elkhart.
“We’re not looking past the next game,” Earnhart said. “I’m trying to keep them focused. I’ve tried to emphasize the importance of being humble. Whatever happens, happens. I told the girls at the very first practice that it’s fun to score a lot of points but all you have to do is win by one.”
The winner of Tuesday’s game will play Friday night at 8 p.m. at Toney Burger Activity Center and Stadium in Austin.
