NZ standout elects to play at Hillsdale

NORTH ZULCH – Mackenzie Horn is the first North Zulch student in years to commit to college on an athletic scholarship, and her peers came out in droves to support her at the signing ceremony Friday.

Horn will be playing volleyball at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in Moore, Okla.

The Lady Saints coach, Dave Ulrich, played college basketball with North Zulch basketball Head Coach David Graves at Lincoln Christian University. Graves contacted his old college buddy and suggested that he take a look at Horn, who was recently named North Zulch’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Although it’s a long drive between North Zulch and Oklahoma, Mackenzie said she’s excited about the opportunity. She played volleyball her freshman year at Round Rock and has been at North Zulch for three years.

“She’s a leader inside and outside the classroom,” said Athletic Director Marshall Earnhart. “She leads by example. She shows up early and stays late. She’s always in the gym. We see the potential in her.”

Mackenzie was joined at Friday’s ceremony by her new Coach Ulrich, Earnhart and her parents, Veronica Bautista and Greg Horn, the women’s volleyball coach at North Zulch.

“It’s been a joy [to coach Mackenzie],” Horn said. “She grew up in the gym. She’s a hard worker.”
