NZISD receives 'B' rating

North Zulch Independent School District (NZISD) received an accountability grade of 89, good for a ‘B’ letter grade, from the Texas Education Agency on Wednesday.

“I am very proud of our district and how much we have improved over the past two years,” said NZISD Superintendent Alan Andrus. “Our lowest score on our campus and district accountability this year is an 88. Then to receive five out of seven distinctions is just another affirmation to validate the great work our students and staff are doing at NZISD.”

The campus received distinctions in the reading, math, science, academic growth and gap categories. Last year, NZISD also received a ‘B’ with a score of 88.

NZISD did, however, perform at a higher level than some campuses that received an ‘A’ grade. The reason for this is that they are held to a higher standard because they are a single campus district opposed to a multi-campus district.

“If NZISD separated our district campus and created an elementary and secondary campus, we would have scored a 90,” said Andrus. “Although I still think the accountability system needs to change some things, this is not one of them. As a school district, we just need to make sure that we are educating our parents, community and even the media on the current accountability system, which is much more complex than a simple letter grade.”

The accountability system is broken into three different categories: Student Achievement, School Progress and Closing the Gaps.

The grade for Student Achievement is calculated using the district’s STAAR performance, their

College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) and the graduation rate. School Progress is measured by academic growth and relative performance whole Closing the Gaps looks at the different demographic groups within a district and their relative performance.

NZISD received an 88 in the Student Achievement category, an 89 in School Progress and an 88 in Closing the Gaps.
