She was preceded in death by her loving husband Alfert, parents Fritz and Clara Nicol, son Garry Swonke, daughter Barbara Jean Swonke, sisters Ura Walker, Lucille Jones, and Clara Jane Swonke, grandson David (Hot Rod) Swonke and Joe Swonke and great grandson Jason Hooper. She is survived by her children James and wife Wanda Swonke, Charles and wife Judy Swonke, Carolyn and husband David Barron, Robert and wife Tenny Swonke, Gloria and husband Johnny Barron, David and wife Verna Swonke, Steven and wife Leasa Swonke; by her sister Velma Williams; and by her 34 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and one great-great-grandson on the way.

Pearl lived through the Great Depression and shared many stories about those hard times. Her family includes many generations of Texans including members who fought at the battle of San Jacinto in the Texas Revolutionary War.

Pearl married Alfert in May 1939 and was in the dairy business in north Harris County for 35-plus years. They sold their business on Stuebner Airline in late 1970s and moved next to her parents in Iola, Texas.

Pearl loved fishing, crabbing, crochet, quilting and gardening. Most of all she loved Vegas and pulled the handle in earlier years but in later years pushed “MAX” bet button in Louisiana on her 95th birthday. Family was always first with Pearl. Frequent family gatherings numbered in the hundreds; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws all came to Pearl’s house. Grandkids got a card and a $2 bills as birthday gift including the married ones’ spouses. Pearl was truly the “rock” of this large family and will be dearly missed.

The Funeral Mass was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble, and interment followed at Schlobohm Family Cemetery in Houston.
