Madisonville’s junior varsity powerlifting team placed second and the varsity placed fifth last week during the 2016 invitational meet.
Matthew Longoria was the high scorer for varsity, lifting 855 total pounds. Winners in the JV division, which included ninth- and 10th-graders were Bryce Roundtree (450 pounds), Desomond Walls (670 pounds), Efran Garza (785 pounds), Corbin Rodriguez (1,025 pounds), Joey McIver (975 pounds), Eliseo Reyes (790 pounds), Andy Gonzales (665 pounds) and Raphael Franco (840 pounds).
Head Coach Lu Olvera said he was grateful to the coaches, teachers, administrators, student athletes, cheerleaders, cheer sponsors and volunteers who helped host the meet and provided behind-the-scenes assistance.
“No doubt the success was a tribute to all who provided a helping hand for our student athletes to represent their school and community,” Olvera said. “Our boys did a great job of competing and are continuing to work on their total lift goals.”
The Mustangs compete next on Feb. 10 at Waller High School.
