Madison County raised more than $21,00 for the American Cancer Society through the annual Relay for Life event. This year, organizers say they hope to increase that number and continue to raise awareness for the disease.
A kickoff event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Truman Kimbro Center. Refreshments will be served and attendees can pick up information about joining a team and meet with sponsors.
“Kickoff signifies the start of the 2016 Relay season,” said Erin Robinson, community manager for Relay for Life. “Madison County has already raised nearly $7,000 this year but we still have work to do, and we need your help. We welcome anyone and everyone who is passionate about ending cancer to join us. Come and learn how to start a team, register as a survivor, learn where the money goes, celebrate and more.”
The local Relay for Life – the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event – is set for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Lake Madison, 1215 E. Collard St., Madisonville.
Robinson said this year they hope to schedule 18 teams, 150 participants and 40 registered cancer survivors in Madison County. Their local fundraising goal is $31,000.
Last year, 65 participants on eight teams joined the relay, along with 20 registered survivors.
