Restaurant inspections resume

Don Grooms appeared before Commissioners last week to discuss the four-month lapse in issuing food service permits, inspections and addressing complaints.

Grooms performed those inspections as a county employee until February. Chase Manning has since taken over Grooms’ former post. He has been training to be licensed to inspect and issue permits for on-site sewage facilities (septic systems), and had not yet begun training as a food inspector as of the June 26 meeting.

County Judge C. E. McDaniel clarified that Grooms would only be performing the inspections until Manning is certified.

“Chase and I have gotten calls,” Grooms told county officials. “The county has been without any permitting or inspection since my resignation four months ago. The corporate offices are coming down on our restaurants. The county is responsible for that.”

“I like the county,” Grooms added. “I want to see everybody taken care of and I’m offering the service at no cost to the county.”

Grooms explained that the cost for his services is paid by the school or business being inspected.

“I’ll get 50 percent and you will get 50 percent,” Grooms said.

Manning said his training begins with the food handler program, then the food service manager training. Beyond that, he said he would have to see how the rest works.

Grooms offered that the state will monitor Manning for a couple of months to see that he understands the rules and procedures.

Commissioners unanimously agreed to have Grooms performed the inspections as a contract worker until Manning is certified.

In other business, the county approved a variance

o   Commissioners approved the dedication of Reyes Silva Lane, a private road, for 911 addressing purposes.

o   Approved a variance sought by Ernie and Rani Welch to Woodbine.

o   Approved a re-plat of Lot 33 in River Oaks Estates, and beginning the 30-day notification period.

o   Approved a land division request in the Amy Boatwright Survey at 3042 Strawther Road.

o   Approved a variance from subdivision rules for 9360 OSR and 12063 Hwy. 21 East in Midway.
