An attempted armed robbery of Fruteria El Mercadito, a fruit market located on Highway 75 across from Madisonville High School, resulted in the store’s owner taking the gun from the would-be robber before he fled the scene on Tuesday morning.

The suspect was allegedly hit in the head by the market’s owner during the scuffle before he ran out of the store.

“A black man came into the store with a T-shirt wrapped around his face and a gun in his right hand,” said MPD Chief Herbert Gilbert on scene. “He starts to reach over the counter for the cash register and the owner was able to catch him off guard, grab the hand with the gun in it and take it from him.

“We have the T-shirt and gun inside, at this point we are still processing the scene.”

The gun was not loaded, Gilbert said.

According to Gilbert, the suspect came back and opened the store’s door, but fled the scene again when approached by the owner.

He then ran south to Mimosa Street, which runs parallel to State Highway 75 behind the market. MPD Officers knocked on every door of a nearby apartment complex to learn if anyone had seen anything regarding the suspect.

“We do not have any idea who the suspect is at this time, but we will surely find out with all of the evidence that we have in the store,” said Gilbert less than an hour after the attempted robbery.

The suspect is an African American male who will likely have a wound on the left side of his head. Locals with any relevant information are encouraged to contact the Madisonville Police Department at 936-348-3317.
