School rankings outlined

Madisonville Curriculum Director Keith West presented the school board Monday with results of the annual Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), generated by the Texas Education Association.

“It’s a tremendous amount of information covering everything from school safety to financial data and college enrollment data,” West said. “This is nothing new. It came out in this format in November.”

West advised that Madisonville students are performing at the state average in reading and social studies. Writing dipped slightly below average, but science and math were above average.

“We are about 10 percent above the state average in math,” West said. “We performed very well.”

He added that he is pleased with the district’s completion rate as it compares with other districts. About 72 percent of Madisonville CISD students are considered economically disadvantaged by state standards, meaning that they receive free or discounted lunches. West said that is well above the state average. About 42 percent of the students are considered by the state to be at risk.

West explained that the report demonstrates the district does a good job at recruiting teachers “and creating a good environment where teachers want to stay.”

“We have a very talented staff and a great student body,” said Superintendent Keith Smith.

In other matters, the school board:
