It was one of those nights, whenever it appeared North Zulch had an answer for Somerville, the Yeguas changed the question. The Bulldogs kept chipping away at Somerville’s lead in the second half, but every time North Zulch made it a one or two possession game, the Yeguas would find an answer, eventually winning Friday night, 65-55.
Somerville led by 17 at the half, but North Zulch was able to cut that double-digit deficit to single digits outscoring Somerville in the third quarter 16-8.
The Bulldogs picked up their defensive intensity late in the fourth but ultimately fell to Somerville.
“We played better defense in the second half,” said Head Coach David Graves. “But our defense the past couple games hasn’t been what we would like it to be. The good thing is we have three games left to punch our ticket and finish our goal.”
Gerhart Wiese led the team with 31 points and 20 rebounds. Tye Douga had 13 points and five rebounds and both Kaleb Douga and Cole Weaver had five points and five rebounds each.
North Zulch fell to 14-12 on the season with the loss.
“We are going to keep battling as a team for the remainder of the season,” said Graves. “We are growing as a program and as long as I’m at the helm we will keep competing the right way, that’s with heart, discipline and fight, because we are family.”
North Zulch will host Normangee at home Friday. Tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m.
