The Madisonville Mustang boys’ golf team advanced to the state tournament in Austin this week.
The Mustangs shot a two-day total of 655 at Raven Nest in Huntsville last week, finishing second to Carthage in Region 3-4A, said Coach Jerry Hopkins.
“The top three teams from regionals advance, and the Mustangs are one of the final 12 teams to compete in Austin,” Hopkins said.
During the Huntsville tournament, sophomore Bryce Bennett shot 170; sophomore Ben Phillips shot 173; junior Trae Bennett shot 172; sophomore Sam Bennett fired 141 and junior Zack Kelly shot 201, earning the Mustangs their second consecutive trip to state.
The top four scores were used each day, Hopkins said.
Sam Bennett won the individual gold medal with a two-day total of three under 141.
“Sam shot 71 one day and 70 on day two to win the tournament,” Hopkins said.
A Mustang soccer camp for youth in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will be held May 31 and June 1.
Sign-up forms are available at the elementary, intermediate and junior high campuses and can be returned with a $30 payment and information on the child’s T-shirt size.
Checks can be made out to MCISD and should be returned by May 23 to Madisonville Intermediate School, Coach Lindsey/Coach Reyes, P.O. Box 635, Madisonville, Texas 77864. Forms also can be returned to the child’s homeroom teacher.
The camp’s coaches, Lauren Lindsey and Baltazar Reyes, led Madisonville High School through their first girls’ and boys’ soccer seasons this year.
