Texas gyms were allowed to open Monday in accordance with Gov. Greg Abbott’s May 6 executive order. Facilities in Madisonville opened partially, allowing 25 percent capacity (not including employees) along with a set of state required rules.

“The suggestion is everyone is supposed to wear gloves, and we have hand sanitizer avaibile,” said Lindsey Hard of Fantastic Tans on Highway 21 in Madisonville. “We are saying about 10-12 capacity at a time right now. Everyone needs to disinfect machines before and after use to keep everything down.”

The facility’s tanning services also opened back up Monday. The tanning beds are to be sanitized and cleaned by staff before use, as usual.

The state’s official guidelines state that lockers and showers are to remained closed. Workout equipment should be spaced out to allow at least six feet between patrons. Individuals are also told to wear gloves that fully cover their fingers and wrists as well as a face mask. Those 65 years of age or older are encouraged to stay home.

Currently, Texans can only play sports that do not include contact with other players and only four people can play at a time. This includes sports such as basketball, soccer and football.

Starting May 6, indoor and outdoor swimming pools were also allowed to reopen at 25% capacity. Venues such as splash pads and water parks remain closed.
