The Texas Mushroom Festival will take a year off to regroup.
According to a press release from TMF organizers, after 17 straight years of "All Things Mushrooms," the Board of Directors for the Texas Mushroom Festival has voted to cancel its 18th annual festival that was originally scheduled for Oct. 13.
The release states that discussions are still being held to determine the feasibility of continuing the event in 2019.
"Our mission has been to make a major contribution to the ever-improving quality of life in the City of Madisonville by providing its citizens with a significant and continuing source of community pride, a citywide celebration by and for every citizen," the release states. "The festival is a means of promoting the benefits of a common bond between the people, businesses, government, education, and civic organizations which make up our community."
The release, signed by incoming board president Steve Carter, states that it was a very difficult decision that will disappoint many of the thousands upon thousands that visit, volunteer, and partake in all the festival activities.
"We will continue to evolve and plan for the 2019 festival by reaching out to the community and spreading the word of the importance of this festival to the community of Madisonville and all the surrounding area," the release states. "Volunteers are what it takes to continue to move forward. Being part of such a great community event can be very rewarding, extremely fun, and hopefully very contagious."
Carter said in the statement the festival is 100 percent reliant on the many volunteers that assist, not only on festival day but throughout the year by serving on planning committees, setting up different events, and just overall help; and without this assistance, the festival just does not have the ability to function.
"It's all about the volunteers," Carter said.
The release states that over the past few years it has become very challenging to get the volunteers needed, and this year the festival could not reach the level of participation needed to stage the event.
