Tour de' Madison deemed a success

Last Saturday morning, cyclists set out on a beautiful tour of Madison County in the first ever “Tour de’ Madison” Bicycle Ride Festival, choosing one of four routes, from a two mile family ride to a forty mile advanced ride.

The downtown square was alive with an old fashioned street festival during the ride complete with music, vendor booths, food, children’s activity zone and  a car show.

From Tupperware, to Funnel Cakes, to having your blood pressure checked with Dr. Audrey Ormberg, Medical Director at Huntsville Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic; downtown visitors were in for a treat.

During the two-mile family ride, a pep rally organized by Sandra Guice was held at Mary Anderson Park to cheer on riders and add to the excitement of the event.  Rufus Refuge, the Juneteenth Association, ETX Energy and New Life Baptist Church all sponsored Relief Stations for cyclists along their journey.

“The festival went amazingly well for a first time event here in Madisonville,” commented Laura Lawrenz, Director of Marketing and Tourism for the City of Madisonville.  “We had sixty one registered riders, and even with the weather being somewhat uncooperative, sixty of them showed up to complete the ride.  Tim Dixon of the Bike Spot in Huntsville and coordinator of Raven’s Ride, a cycling event in Huntsville, provided tremendous assistance in coordinating this event into a success.”

Suzanne Risinger, Spanish Teacher at Madisonville High School, also provided leadership to nineteen student volunteers who supported in all aspects of the event.  Lawrenz said graciously, “We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Plans are already in the works to carry out another “Tour de’ Madison” festival next year, possibly adding another longer, sixty mile route for the most advanced of riders.

Platinum Sponsors of the event were the City of Madisonville, The State of Texas, Madison County, KAGS, Huntsville Memorial Hospital and NAACP;  Gold Sponsors - The Bike Spot, ETX Energy, MARI, Monterey Mushrooms and Walmart;
