NEW ORLEANS — Daniel Rankin, grandson of Virginia and Johnny Boyett of Madisonville and nephew of Debbie Graham and Dewayne Boyett, was recently commended for his performance during a Tulane baseball game vs. University of Texas in Austin.
No. 28 Tulane baseball posted a series-clinching victory over Texas by a score of 5-3 on Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in a game that saw timely hitting and clutch work out of the bullpen by the Green Wave.
Tulane (13-7) allowed Texas (8-12) to tie things at two runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh, but Jake Rogers and Matt Rowland reached base before Lex Kaplan put down a bunt-single up the first base line on a squeeze play that allowed Rogers to scamper home for the go-ahead run. Tulane tacked on another run on a bases loaded walk by Stephen Alemaisin the eighth before Dan Rankin closed out the game for his first save of the year.
“I think we got an outstanding pitching performance by Emerson Gibbs,” said Tulane Coach David Pierce. “He gave up two runs, but really neither of them were his fault. I thought Trevor Simms was the perfect bridge to get to Dan Rankin, and I thought he was good as well. Timely hitting and pitching is how you win. This was a great series win.”
