The margin for error has always been small with this young Madisonville offense, and after a multitude of errors late in the game Thursday night Madisonville fell to Athens 60-59.
Madisonville led by seven with 40 seconds remaining in the game, but turnovers late in regulation cost the Mustangs the lead and ultimately cost them the game.
“Athens made some tough contested shots to get themselves back in the game, but we made a costly turnover on our inbound play which gave the Hornets the ball underneath their basket with five seconds remaining,” said Coach Taylor.
Athens capitalized on that late game turnover by hitting a go-ahead basket as time expired. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 21-11 overall and 4-5 in district.
“Overall I thought we played a pretty good game but we just made some unfortunate turnovers late in regulation,” Taylor said.
Nick Porter led the team with 22 points. Tommy Holiday had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Kasey Williamson had seven points and Deonte McAdams added six points.
With the loss the Mustangs were set to face off against Mexia Saturday afternoon in Fairfield. Madisonville fell to the Black Cats, 60-44.
