Two killed in collision

NORTH ZULCH — Two people were killed on Sunday as the result of a head-on collision east of North Zulch.

Sgt. Jimmy Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. Texas 21, 1.7 miles east of the village of North Zulch.

According to reports, a 2016 Dodge pickup driven by Zachary Paul, 19, of Marquez, was headed west on 21 when it collided with a 2016 Lincoln passenger vehicle driven by Paulette King, 50, of Pollock.

Reports indicated that Paul’s vehicle crossed the center line. Paul told officers he had fallen asleep.

King and a passenger, Carl King, 58, of Lufkin, were pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Lew Plotts.

Paul was transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan with serious injuries, Morgan said.

In cases like these, Morgan said, the DPS troopers will continue the investigation, and then present findings to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Charges are pending at this time, he said.
