Luke 8:22-25 says, “One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake so that the boat was being swamped and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided and all was calm. "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."
Fear can be a crippling thing in our lives. When we face things like adversity, sickness, unemployment, relationship problems, or maybe a financial hardship of some kind, it’s very easy to become so paralyzed that we can’t make wise decisions or react in a confident, Christian manner. It’s during those storms that we must depend on someone who can give us the power to overcome.
When these situations come into our lives, we must not fear. If we are going to go about handling them in a Christian manner there are three things we must do.
First, we must realize who’s in the boat with us. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus was in the boat with His disciples that day and He is in the boat with you if you have placed your faith in Him. Once you truly realize who Jesus is, you can then begin to deal with adversity in your life. Jesus was sleeping during all of this and wasn’t the least bit worried or taken by surprise.
Second, you must call on Him after you realize He’s in the boat. As that storm raged and the disciples were scared, they finally woke Jesus up and asked for His help. Romans 10:13 says, “every one who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Have you knelt in front of the almighty God and asked Him to help you? Yes, God does know when you need something and what it is you need, but He wants you to present your request to Him through faithful prayer. When you ask in faith it shows God that you trust Him.
Thirdly, you must have faith that He can handle the situation when you call on Him. Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.” Andrew Murray said “Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectation.” Even when something seems to be too big to handle we must realize that Jesus is way more powerful than anything our minds can think of. When the disciples woke Jesus, He stood up and simply rebuked the storm and it quit. He is still in the storm stopping business today if you just have faith that He can handle it.
I realize that people have real problems and I, by no means, am trying to diminish what you are going through today. However, I know a Man that can come into your life and calm the storm no matter how bad it is. That man’s name is Jesus Christ and He is waiting on you to trust Him enough to call on Him for help.
God Bless and have a great week in the Lord.
