North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department hosted its 1st Annual Chili Cook-off this past weekend. The event revived a feeling of community, friendship and a little healthy competition to area residents and the fire department.
There were 15 cook-off teams vying for the first place trophy (and bragging rights) in both beans and chili. Two separate judge teams were called in and tasked with the nearly impossible choice of which team would come out on top.
In the end, it was the “Just Showed Up” bunch that took first place in both the bean and chili competition. Sissy Kilgore and Danny Evans, both residents of North Zulch, are a two person competition team that participates in area cook-offs, not only for pleasure, but to help raise money to travel and cook for military troops.
Vendors were set up selling items from Koozies (by Floozie Koozies) to hand tooled leather holsters (by Rockin Bar E Leather) and home décor (by Lil Bit of Sass). Around 100 people were in attendance to support the NZ fire department and many area businesses made donations to bolster revenue for the department as well. Close to $4000 was raised in total.
“Everything went fantastic. Things went better than we ever dreamed they would. I would like to thank the community for all of their support and the local businesses that made donations to make the event a success,” said Harold Sapp, NZ Volunteer Fire Department Chief.
Plans are already in the works for a bigger and even better cook-off next year. Sapp stated that they are hoping to secure more vendors and create a family experience during the cook-off possibly bringing in bounce houses and games.
