Three-vehicle crash, two killed on HWY 90

Around 4:45 p.m., on Tuesday, January 10, a 2016 Toyota Tacoma and a 2004 Chevrolet pickup were traveling south on Highway 90 near County Road 409 in the area of Navasota.  

At the same time, a 2001 Ford F-250 was traveling north, when it crossed into the southbound lane, striking the Toyota in the rear and then the Chevrolet head-on.  

The Ford driver, David Duggan, 63, of Buda, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Grimes County Justice of the Peace Mark Laughlin.

Madison County riders show promise

Cutting horses have been a thing in Madison County since way back, when Ronnie Nettles won the prestigious NCHA Futurity in 1984 on Doc Per! Now there is a nearby NCHA affiliate, Lone Star Cutters, which regularly hosts shows just a bit north of Madison County, at Leon County Expo Center, 3637 CR 305 in Buffalo. Lone Star Cutters presented 2022 year-end awards at its first 2023 show, the first weekend of this new year.

North Zulch Extends Winning Streak to five

The North Zulch Varsity Boys Basketball team extended their winning streak to 5 games last week by defeating a pair of district opponents. On Tuesday the Bulldogs took down Round Top-Carmine 63-33, fueled by a 41-14 second half. North Zulch was led by Ali Sunny who scored 31 points on a 5/10 effort from the 3 point line. The Bulldogs would get solid contributions from a number of others including 9 points and 3 rebounds from fellow Senior Logan Klentz, along with 7 points and 9 assists from Junior Luis Gonzalez. Tripp Baker chipped in 7 points as well and Braxton Brockman controlled the glass with 10 rebounds on the night. On Friday North Zulch traveled to Buckholts where they blitzed the Badgers 76-29. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Ali Sunny with 20 points, Tripp Baker had a solid game as well with a 9 point, 8 rebound, 2 steal game. Luis Gonzalez had 6 points and 10 assists on the night, River Gafford had 7 points 5 rebounds and 3 steals, Braxton Brockman chipped in 12 points, and Logan Klentz controlled the boards with 17 rebounds on the night along with 8 points. Senior Fasial Sattar had 8 points and 3 rebounds to help lead the Bulldogs to a big win. Next week North Zulch will face off with Brazos Valley rival Calvert on Tuesday in North Zulch, and then travel to Richards on Friday. Madison County’s First Elected Officials

In 1831 while Texas was still under Mexican control, Texas was organized into three departments, called Bexar, Brazos, and Nacogdoches. The northern portion of what was Moses Austin’s colony and along the Brazos and Colorado Rivers was located in the Brazos department. A petition was submitted to organize it into a municipality at Washington-on-the-Brazos.
