After serving the community with delicious food and warm hospitality, Bushel and a Perk cafe bid farewell as it closed its doors on Friday, June 9. The announcement came through a heartfelt release from Renee Garner, co-owner of the cafe.

The $165 million settlement with one of the nation’s large pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) – for overcharging the Texas Medicaid program – sent an important message about oversight and accountability.

Walter Carrington Price, age 81, of Bedias, Texas, passed away June 13, 2023, in Bryan, Texas, following an extended illness. A funeral service celebrating Walter’s life was held at 10 A.M., Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the Church of Singleton.

Bobbie Ann (McWhorter) Souther, 78 of North Zulch, Texas, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2023, peacefully at home with her daughter by her side. Bobbie was born on August 23, 1944, in North Zulch, Texas, to Buell Dorman and Mary Lillian (Martin) McWhorter.

Recently I found copies of the Madisonville Meteor’s 50th anniversary edition, which was published August 24. 1944. The 32-page issue aimed to fully relate our county’s history, though war-time conditions handicapped such efforts. With publisher H.B. Fox serving in the U.S. Army, his wife, Mrs. Fox, acted as editor, with Mrs. Eli Smith as the associate editor. The newspaper began printing on January 19, 1895. At the time of the anniversary edition, the subscription rate was $1.50 a year in Madison County and the county trading area but $2 elsewhere.
