With loving memories of Jerry “Cubby” Montgomery, who passed away on Feb. 20, 2024, we recall a man of remarkable dedication and talent. Jerry was born Aug. 26, 1964 to Claude & Ruby (Shiflet) Montgomery, the youngest of his large family. He began his journey with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at eighteen years old and climbed the ranks to retire as a respected Region 1 Training Captain. Born and raised in Madisonville, Texas, Jerry’s roots remained close to his heart throughout his life.

As a graduate of Madisonville High School, he cherished the many friendships made during those formative years and enjoyed keeping in touch with many of his beloved classmates.

Those who knew Jerry fondly remember his captivating storytelling and his inherent knack for creativity. With a keen interest in history, particularly the mysteries of the Templar Knights, Jerry was a true history buff.

He cherished visits to the Renaissance Festival, where his passion for the past truly came alive.

As a man of strong faith, Jerry held firm to his beliefs and derived peace from his spirituality. Beyond his love for history and faith, Jerry found solace in the companionship of his beloved pets, recognizing the special bond he shared with them especially Buster, Kenzi and Aggie, who are all in Heaven and having a joyful reunion with Jerry.

Although he had been inactive from the Masonic Lodge for many years, Jerry held a deep respect for his membership and held the distinction of Mason near to his heart.

Jerry was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers, Benny & Roger Montgomery. Surviving family members include wife, Sonya Montgomery of Huntsville; son, Joshua Montgomery (Frances Bello) of Austin; and siblings, Jimmy (Susan) Montgomery of Tyler, Wally (Teresa) Montgomery of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Terry (Cindi) Montgomery of Holly Lake Ranch and Linda (Paul) Montgomery Maier of Tyler. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the love and support of Joshua’s mom, Trisha Redding.

As we prepare to honor Jerry’s legacy, we invite friends and family to join together in celebrating his life at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, at Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville, Texas. Jerry will be laid to rest at Jozye Cemetery following the service. A time of visitation and reminiscing will take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
