1942-2024

Weldon Larry Wakefield, (81), of Madisonville, TX passed away peacefully on Jan. 6, 2024. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and cherished time with his extended family during quail dinners, sandwich suppers and shrimp boils.

Born in Crockett, TX on Jan. 24, 1942, Larry graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in sociology and pursued a variety of jobs including working for Carruth Rehabilitation Center, the United Way, McMahan Construction, and the Ferguson Unit of The Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was known for keeping organized records and helping people transition into jobs after time served.

Larry had a passion for time spent on the water, fishing, hunting and finding a home project to tackle. He worked to live and enjoyed time spent on his passions and adventures.

He was a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout. Larry would recite the Scout Oath and Scout Law and lived the values. Larry was an active member in his church community and strived to honor God with his life. He will be remembered for his determination, steadfastness, and positive outlook on life. He would often express that he had a good life and was most comfortable in nature among the trees (which he called his flowers) and God’s creation.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jane McMahan Wakefield; son, Wesley (Heather) Wakefield; daughter, Julia (Andrew) Mechell; grandchildren, Eli and Oliver Wakefield; brother, Kenneth (Jayne) Wakefield; sister, Wilma Wyle Wingfield; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Julian Grady Wakefield; his mother, Elma Tarpley Wakefield; his brother, Julian (Bud) Grady Wakefield; and sister, Betty Jean Wakefield Gayle. His departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt by family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at The Midway Church of Christ in Midway, TX with the visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Bro. Dale Underwood and Bro. Joel Douget will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to your favorite charity.

May Larry rest in peace and may the memories of his love and laughter bring comfort to those who knew and loved him.
