Mustangs finish 2-1 on tourney's opening day

In tournament action Thursday, the Madisonville Mustangs took two of their three games with wins over Fairfield 6-3, and Woodville 10-1. In their third contest the Mustangs went hitless in a game called after 2 and a half innings of play giving La Grange the 4-0 win.

In the Fairfield game the Mustangs jumped out on top early, eventually staking a 6-0 lead over the Eagles. A triple and a sacrifice fly by Fairfield cut the Mustangs lead in half, but the game was already sealed.

Lady Mustangs grab back-to-back wins

The Lady Mustangs doubled up on Bellville 8-4, and dominated Manor New Tech 19-2 at the Caldwell Tournament Thursday.

Against Bellville Grace Williamson went 2-for-2 with one RBI and Grace Coleman went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s.

After the first two innings of play the Lady Brahmas and Madisonville were knotted at three.

The game ended in the bottom of the third when the Lady Mustangs went on a 5 run tear to seal the victory.

‘Chopp’ commits

CAMPBELL ATKINS Armando ‘Chopp’ Juarez committed to continue his football career at the collegiate level with Sterling College in Kansas this week. Madisonville High School will celebrate his next step with a signing ceremony in the competition gym March 8 at 3 p.m..

Lady Dogs fall in Area playoffs

The North Zulch women’s basketball team fell to McMullen County (Tilden) in the Area playoff round in Flatonia Saturday by a score of 62-53 to conclude their season. “When I first saw (Tilden) on film I knew they were potentially very dangerous,” said head coach Michael Stenseth on the opponent, who finished atop their district and earned a bye in the Bi-District round.

The Madisonville baseball team returned to the field Tuesday after a hiatus due to the winter storm to host Malakoff in their season opener after just a pair of scrimmages. The Mustangs will host a tournament at MHS beginning Thursday and compete against Fairfield (9 a.m.), Woodville (5 p.m.) and La Grange ( 7 p.m.) on the first day.
