The Madisonville men’s soccer team welcomed 11 teams to Mustang Stadium Thursday through Saturday to compete in the program’s annual tournament at MHS. Eight of the 11 teams advanced to the tournament round, which took place Saturday.

The Mustangs qualified for the tournament round with a 1-2 record in pool play, which included a victory over Westwood and losses to Westwood and Lake Creek.

The tournament’s 11 visiting soccer teams included Huntsville (junior varsity), Westwood, Lake Creek, Bryan, Brenham, Livingston, Montgomery, Royal, Splendora, Lake Belton and Rockdale.

Lake Creek and Bryan advanced to Saturday’s championship round with semifinal wins over Brenham and Livingston, respectively. Lake Creek defeated Bryan 2-0 to win the Mustang Classic.

After falling 4-0 to eventual tournament champion Lake Creek Thursday, Madisonville bounced back with a 4-0 win over Westwood in their evening matchup. Chase Couch tallied three goals for the Mustangs in the win and Ryan Kinsey added another.

The Mustangs dropped their final pool matchup Friday to eventual runner-up Bryan by a score of 1-0 before falling to Livingston in the Quarterfinals Saturday by a score of 2-0.

Prior to hosting the Mustang Classic, Madisonville welcomed Huntsville to MHS for a single matchup Jan. 5. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

“The guys play hard but we are having a hard time keeping the possession and with our combination of passes,” said head coach Baltazar Reyes on his overall assessment of the young season. “If you cannot advance past half field, you cannot score, and that is what we are struggling with right now. They are young and they work hard, we just need to figure it out.”

The team’s Tuesday matchup against Navasota was canceled. The Mustangs are scheduled to compete in a tournament in Brenham Thursday through Saturday.
