Madison County 4-H members are collecting used show clothes to help young exhibitors in need of proper attire prepare for the ring.

Show attire has changed over the years and prices have climbed, according to 4-H program assistant Bethany Janner. Traditional button-down shirts gave way to flowy tops and polos, bedazzled jeans turned into Ariat trousers and boots transitioned to New Balance sneakers.

To help area exhibitors manage, members are accepting donations of western shirts, jeans, show pants, boots and accessories at the Madison County Fairgrounds through Monday, Jan. 6.

'A lot of it is just sitting in the back of your closet and someone else can benefit from them,' Janner said.

The local council's community service project comes in partnership with The Girl That Gives Back, a social media personality known as 'the girl in the green blazer' who shows swine. The clothing drive was her idea, according to officials, and Madison County 4-H will deliver collected items to her next year.

Janner said the effort could help establish a local program for younger Madison County members just starting out.

'You're giving that outfit a second chance, you're giving it another spot to shine in,' she said. 'It's really empowering the youth and providing confidence for those who may not have the financial means to afford some of the show attire.'

Council members may also help staff a booth at major stock shows to distribute clothes directly to exhibitors.
