The Midway Volunteer Fire Department welcomed a new addition to the organization Friday with the acquisition of a second engine truck. The Pierce Manufacturing brand truck was built in Florida and picked up by department members at a factory in Houston late Friday afternoon.

“It is certainly a boost for the department, our county and our fire district,” said Chief Edwin Faw. “It is going to help us in many different ways. It can hold more people than any other truck we have, and their equipment, it can serve any kind of typical fire that we have. We can use it to assist in all operations.”

The department was able to make the purchase largely thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service.

“The funds we generate through fundraisers and what the county gives us will pay for the note,” said Faw.

The department’s main fundraisers include their Annual “Po Boy” Steak Dinner and Dance at the end of February, their Fireworks, Fish Fry and Crawfish event at the end of June and their Steak Championship Barbeque Cook Off, which is sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA).

The steak cook off event typically takes place at the end of October, but fluctuates due to IBCA availability.

The Midway Volunteer Fire Department now has two engines, two booster or brush trucks, a tanker and a boat in their truck arsenal.
