Sunday’s snowstorm disrupted a number of regularly scheduled events in Madison County as the work week began Monday. The rare winter storm, which produced as many as seven inches of snow in some locations, resulted in closures at both Madisonville CISD and North Zulch ISD, as well as delayed starts on Tuesday.

As a result of the weather, Madisonville city offices were closed until 10 a.m. Monday. The monthly city council meeting, which convenes the second Monday of each month, was still held at its regularly scheduled time. However, a number of agenda items were tabled due to weather related road conditions. Certain individuals who needed to be in attendance to discuss the items were unable to make it to the meeting.

Among the tabled items was the approval of moving forward with the planned waste water treatment plant improvements.

In November, the Texas Water Development Board announced that the city of Madisonville was approved for a $3,965,000 loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund to make improvements on the city’s wastewater system, including a new sewer line under Interstate 45.

The Madison County Commissioner’s Court meeting, which convenes every other Monday morning, was pushed back until 1 p.m. due to the weather. All county offices opened at 1 p.m. Monday.

The Commissioners approved all action items listed on the Monday agenda.

Sunday’s storm also resulted in outages from the three main electrical suppliers in Madison County, Entergy, MidSouth Energy and Houston County Electrical Co-op. For timely updates on the status of outages, visit the individual company’s website.

“We had several reports of limbs falling and motor vehicle accidents, but overall we fared pretty well, especially for a community that is not used to dealing with over three inches of snow,” said Madison County Emergency Management Coordinator Shelly Butts. “As the snow melts, we could see more limbs breaking and line issues.”
