Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

Bedias Creek district to leave Wells Fargo for Normangee bank

Closing two bank accounts will take a road trip to Centerville. That was the word from district clerk Kendra Mahaffey on Monday, June 1, as the Bedias Creek Soil and Water Conservation District board worked through its move from Wells Fargo to Normangee State Bank.

Houston toad rules limit Leon County conservation work

Most of Leon County sits inside the protected habitat of the Houston toad, an endangered species, and that limits when landowners there can clear brush or burn pasture. Amanda Lowey, the district conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, told the Bedias Creek Soil and Water Conservation District board Monday, June 1, that the habitat covers all but 5 to 10% of the county.

Texas 21 crash kills Houston man near North Zulch

NORTH ZULCH — A Houston man died and a second driver went to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Texas 21 near Strawther Road Tuesday, June 2, the Department of Public Safety said.

Mujeeb Kharoti, 23, died at the scene. The other driver was taken to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital with suspected fractures.

Commissioners OK Fellowship Lane plat, postpone rabies decision
