Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

Taylor sentenced to life for continuous sexual abuse of child

A Madison County jury found Glenn Taylor, 61, guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child Wednesday, April 15, and sentenced him to life in prison the following day after deliberating less than 10 minutes, according to a press release from Criminal District Attorney Courtney Cain.

Judge Tracy Sorensen handed down the sentenced Thursday, April 16, in the 278th Judicial District Court. The life sentence is the maximum punishment allowed by law for the charge, according to the press release.

Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell presented Curtis Klingle with a Peace Officer’s Purple Heart April 10.

Local nets $1M bond, fourth child pornography arrest

Deputies arrested a suspect for the fourth time Wednesday in relation to a child pornography case dating back to August 2024, officials said. Justin Elliott Lee was arrested April 8 and booked into the Madison County Jail on 10 counts of possession of child pornography, records show.

MARKER UNVEILED FOR RECONSTRUCTION-ERA LEGISLATOR

Dozens gather Saturday, April 11 for the unveiling of a state historical marker honoring Thomas Beck on the south side of the Madison County Courthouse lawn. Beck represented Madison County in three Texas Legislatures during Reconstruction.

Six generations of Thomas Beck’s family stand beside his state historical marker Saturday, April 11 at the Madison County Courthouse. Beck was born into slavery in Kentucky around 1819 and served three terms in the Texas House representing Madison and Grimes counties.
