Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

Mustangs advance to state, regional Academic UIL meets

Street repairs stalled on easement signatures

Residents got a closer look at the city’s grant-funded $1.2 million street improvement project last month, but construction remains on hold as the city works to secure remaining easements. A portion of Madisonville property owners March 17 met with city staff, grant administrators and the project engineer eyeing work on Bailey, Casey, Arrow, Memorial (First) and Thompson streets.

Three-alarm fire hits highway cowboy church

HUNTSVILLE — A threealarm fire at Branded For Christ Church along Interstate 45 drew in responders from six departments across four counties Thursday. Multiple 911 calls came in around 3:40 a.m.

Court spares mobile home owner unknown fees

County officials this week waived penalties, interest and associated charges for a North Zulch property owner who said he didn't know he owed back taxes on a second mobile home. Hardy Nevill told commissioners March 24 he bought property on Lone Star Road several years ago that had two mobile homes on it.

Feds charge 17 bikers tied to 2022 Madisonville shooting

HOUSTON — Federal prosecutors have charged 17 alleged members of the Homietos outlaw motorcycle gang with racketeering, murder and other violent crimes in a sweeping case tied to a 2022 Madisonville shooting. A superseding indictment unsealed March 18 alleges the group engaged in a series of violent retaliations after the April 2022 shooting at Zip’n Gas Station on East Main Street.

Team members included Brayden S., who placed 1st individually, 1st in grading and 3rd in placing; Katie W., 3rd individual, 4th in placing and 4th in grading; Jade S., 13th in placing; Kasen P.; Kelby C., 7th in grading; and Madi M., 2nd in reasons.
