Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

2024 Farm Bill could help Madison County farmers

Local extension agents say the 2024 Farm Bill, also known as the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, could help farmers and ranchers in Madison County. Allen Homann, a county extension agent from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and Ty Jordan, an extension agent from Prairie View A&M University Extension, believe the bill could positively impact their work and the local agricultural community.

The Texas Department of Transportation held an open house at the Walker County Storm Shelter in Huntsville on Thursday, May 16, amid a storm that ravaged the piney woods and other areas of Texas. According to TxDOT, the goal of the open house was to discuss the proposed Interstate 45 North Walker County Project, designed to improve the roadway's capacity and safety.

Two arrested in child pornography cases

Two individuals were arrested in separate child pornography cases by the Madisonville Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff's Office. On Thursday, May 9, the MPD, assisted by the Madisonville Consolidated ISD Police Department and the MCSO, executed an arrest warrant apprehending 45-year-old Pranai Patel on charges of possession or promotion of child pornography.
