Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

Biennial report details Madison County’s sexual assault response over two years

The completed Sexual Assault Response Team biennial report for Madison County is now public, covering two years of data on how local agencies respond to adult sexual assault cases. The Sexual Assault Resource Center compiled the report from data submitted by each of the nine agencies on the team.

State marker to honor Reconstruction-era legislator

Thomas Beck, born into slavery in Kentucky around 1819, won election to the Texas House three times and represented Madison County for nearly a decade after emancipation. On Saturday, April 11, a state historical marker will be unveiled in his honor at 11 a.m. on the south side of the Madison County Courthouse lawn.

Missing man found alive in Fort Worth

A 45-year-old man who walked out of the Madison County Jail last month and vanished has been found alive in Fort Worth, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Samuel Gebrekirstos Zerea got out Saturday, Feb. 28. The Madisonville Police Department had picked him up two days before on a Class C misdemeanor, deputies said.

School calendar approved, district tackles repairs

NORTH ZULCH — North Zulch Independent School District board members approved the 2026-27 school calendar and worked through a long list of facility problems during their meeting March 12. The board unanimously adopted calendar D, one of four options a district committee put together.

LADY MUSTANGS END UNBEATEN DISTRICT RUN ON TOP

The Lady Mustangs capped a near perfect season and unbeaten district scorecard Monday with a 2-1 win over Palestine to claim the program’s first outright district championship. The Madisonville High School varsity girls soccer team finished 12-0 in District 16-4A with their victory against the Wildcats at Mustang Stadium March 16.

City seeks 30 signatures for $1.2M in roadway repairs

A $1.2 million street improvement project for new drainage and a fresh coat of asphalt on four Madisonville streets is on hold until officials clear one more hurdle. According to City Manager Kelcey Young, about 30 resident signatures for temporary easements are needed before work can begin on Bailey, North Casey, Arrow and Memorial (First) streets.

NZISD earns A, six distinctions in state report

NORTH ZULCH — North Zulch Independent School District earned high marks in its latest academic performance report, claiming six distinctions with some grades ranking among the highest in the state, according to officials. Principals Janie Pope and Donald May reviewed the district’s A ranking and 2024-25 Texas Academic Performance Report scorecard with trustees during their meeting March 12.

Midway council closes doors for guest presentation, orders trailer removed

MIDWAY --- Mayor Randal Dorman closed the doors on a guest presentation during the Board of Aldermen's Monday, March 9 meeting, calling an executive session so a real estate agent could read a letter asking the council to grandfather a property owner into an ordinance.
