Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

City Council adopted rules May 11 setting limits on how long recreational vehicles can stay in residential areas, though one official warned the change could worsen Madisonville’s code enforcement workload. The ordinance allows recreational vehicles in SF1, SF2, MH and MF zoning districts for 72 hours within a seven- day period.

City Council voted last week to push Madisonville’s general elections back to November, a change officials said could help raise voter turnout and cut costs. The council approved May 11 shifting the general election for council members from the May uniform election date to the November uniform election date in odd-numbered years.

Madison County commissioners May 12 approved $15,000 in Hotel Occupancy Tax funding for two upcoming summer events. Madisonville received $10,000 for its second Fourth of July Celebration at Lake Madison Park, double the $5,000 originally requested.
