Hometown folks and troopers lined FM 1452 last Wednesday to provide a well-deserved hero’s welcome to local resident DPS Trooper Juan Tovar. It was a good thing to see.

The troopers also attended the baseball game of Tovar’s son and lined the fence at the Little League game. A picture of those supporting troopers with the team was heartwarming and what goodness is all about.

According to the DPS, Tovar’s recovery will be long. So if you would like to help, several benefits are available to help the Tovar Family. First, there is a fund setup at Prosperity Bank to which you can donate.

Then a benefit is planned for June 19 at the MSCA Pavilion. It comes with all the makings of a great night.The door opens at 5 p.m. and a steak dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Throughout the evening you can bid on silent auction items or raise your hand high when the live auction begins (and enjoy the tunes of Jason Cassidy and Rick Trevino).

Well, let’s try it again! The rain canceled a lot of activities last Thursday including Little League games and cowboy ropings. The little league games are up and running just about any Tuesday or Thursday. Drive over to the Madisonville Park and you can usually watch any age.

Thursday night is also the night for a little cowboy competition. Some serious roping begins at 6:30 p.m. so grab your lawn chairs and head out to the arena behind Crossroads Cowboy Church.

I could be a stargazer if time permitted – and this is a good week for it. Between moonset and dawn, the Lyrids meteor shower should light up the sky. If you’ve never seen them, it’s worth stepping outside and just sitting for a while.

The Lyrids are active each year from about April 16 to April 25 and Meteorologists say the peak will be the predawn hours this Thursday, April 22. Now on a moonless night you can supposedly see 10 to 15 meteors an hour, but wouldn’t you know it, this year there’s a full moon over Texas at that time.

Another champ in the mix! Congratulations to Riley Hope Farris the 2021 NCHA 6/7-year-old Intermediate Amateur Champion. Riley won her title at the recent NCHA Super Stakes showing Baby Genius, a gelding trained by her dad Mike Farris. The two scored a whopping 223 to win the event. Pretty impressive!

On our sick list, Jo Engleking, mom of Loyd Harper of Midway underwent heart surgery last week and is now home recuperating. Send your cards to her at 1211 Glade St. College Station 77840

Congratulations to the Jarrett family on the arrival of Tinley Kate. Tinley, the daughter of Cory Jarrett Shearer and hubby Steven Shearer was born April ??? weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces.

First United Methodist Church has been busy with their after-school tutorial program in math and reading and this coming Tuesday is graduation time. The ceremony will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the Sanctuary and you are invited.

Of course, without tutors there would be no tutorial program, but in our town some 25+ volunteer teachers and five high school students have donated their time to help our future leaders. Hats off to each of you for your selfless act of giving!

Belated happy birthday to Mallie Drake who celebrate her birthday this past Monday, April 19 and to Mrs. Icebell Morgan who celebrated her 96th birthday this past Tuesday. Mrs. Morgan is mom to Patti Wiseman and Lisa Cannon.

This is an unusual week for birthdays. Someone is celebrating every day this week starting with Cannon Cahill and Jessica Hartley who celebrate their birthdays this Friday. Scott Klenk and Gaylon Drake do the same Saturday, Amber Sandlin’s birthday is Sunday while Melissa Bridges and Jerry Williams follow with their birthdays next Monday April 26.

Then its birthday time for Nancy Park Jolly and Skip Barrington, who share next Tuesday I believer for their birthday while Ericalynn Cannon and Wes Hammit do the same next Wednesday.

Then happy anniversary to Paul and Carolyn Bailey. The couple will celebrate their anniversary this Sunday April 25.

And finally, it’s an interesting fact that the majority of today’s population is shaped by those they associate with. Not only do those we spend time with influence us today but also influence our future.

Now you and I are a part of that population, so it might be a good time to take a closer look at those we’re hanging with. One article in my research stressed emphatically those folks can elevate you or they can bring you down.

The author of the blog Personal Excellence stated, “If you hang out with a group of successful, positive individuals who believe in taking responsibility for their lives you will become a proactive individual who shapes his/her future.

If you hang out with a bunch of pessimists who believe that the world is out to get them and there is nothing worthwhile, you will start to descend into a pool of negativity even if you are a positive person.”

We all know negative people and most likely you enjoy some of them. Well, in small doses maybe. Stay around negativity continually, though and the odds are you won’t feel warm fuzzies when you leave that person. So, if someone makes

And when you are, a friendly hello, good to see you and then moving on will help keep the chains of negativity from wrapping around you. In fact, taking that one small step is a confidence builder in controlling your own life.

No, it doesn’t mean dropping that friendship. In fact, you may change that person into a happier pone. After all, being nice is a virtue, taking on someone else’s undesirable characteristics is not.
