On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the Timpson Bears won the Class 2A Division 1 State Championship with Madisonville Native Austin Ashley by their side. Ashley graduated from Madisonville High School (MHS) in 2015 and was involved in all sports, especially football.

As a second-year Offensive line coach, Ashley expressed nothing but gratitude towards the Madisonville Mustangs and the effect our little football team has had on his passion for football – “If it wasn’t for Madisonville helping me get my start and learning the game the way I did, I don’t think I would’ve ever loved the game, as I do now.”

Helping lead the Bears to their first State Championship, Ashley felt pride about being a part of this historic win.

“Every night after a big win during the playoffs, the entire town would be gathered in the square waiting for us. It was like something out of a movie,” said Ashley.

After graduation from MHS, Ashley went on to play for East Texas Baptist University. A career-ending injury pushed him into the seat of student coaching, helping with offensive lines, video setup, and production.

Ashley graduated from ETBU in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree.

“I just want to say thank you for all the support and love from everyone in Madisonville. It means a lot coming from my hometown,” said Ashley.
