Tennis hosts Mustang Invitational

The Madisonville tennis team geared up for their district tournament in China Spring Wednesday and Thursday by hosting the Mustang Invitational at MHS March 16. A number of Madisonville players garnered top finishes during the varsity and junior varsity tournament.

The March 16 tournament included Madisonville, Centerville, Latexo and Leon competing in varsity and junior varsity singles, doubles and mixed matches on the men’s and women’s side.

Serena Powers bested Jicel Torres in a tightly contested matchup in the women’s varsity singles final. The bracket’s quarterfinals were comprised of all Madisonville players with the exception of one slot, including Powers, Torres, Caitlin Manning, Kylie Ouellette, Laynie Nelson, Kayla Morales and McKenna Fraley.

The women’s varsity doubles duo of Maegan Anderson and Jenna Yeager also earned first place by defeating Chais Disanto and Addy McDougald. The latter advanced to the finals after defeating the duo of Yesenia Aceves and Liz Arjon.

Avery Barker prevailed in men’s varsity singles by defeating Eli Risinger, who advanced by Lazaro Almaraz in the semis.

In varsity mixed doubles, the duo of Mason Railsback and Elizabeth Guevara earned first place. Jace Snook and Cesar Rosas took the top prize in men’s doubles over Steven Payan and Ivan Vera, who defeated Ronnie Mosley and Cole Wilkerson in the semis.

The duo of Diana Villagrana and Leonel Zavala took first place in junior varsity mixed doubles while Logan Nelson defeated Cirano Saldana to win men’s junior varsity singles.
