1924 – 2024 Gerald Powell, 99 years of Austin, TX, passed away on February 18, 2024. Graveside services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2024, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery (known to many as the Bracewell Family Cemetery) in Bedias, TX.

1938 – 2024 Dalton Thomas “Sonny” Fox, 85 years, 5 months, and 25 days, of Madisonville, TX passed away Friday, March 8, 2024, in Bryan, TX. Sonny’s life will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Day Funeral Home Chapel with the visitation prior to the service beginning at noon. The burial will follow at Mount Tabor Cemetery. Bro. Brad Brock will officiate.

1941 – 2024 Glenda Rose Batson Wyatt, aged 82, affectionately known to many as Granny Rose, peacefully departed to be with her Lord on March 6, 2024, at The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. The overwhelming love for Glenda was unmistakable as she was surrounded by loved ones in the weeks preceding her passing and at the moment of her departure. Born on April 9, 1941, in Normangee, Texas, Glenda was the daughter of Charlie and Alda Belle Batson. She found her lifelong love in Daniel Thornton (“Poppy”) Wyatt, to whom she was married for 48 years until his passing on March 6, 2004. Glenda is also preceded in death by her brother, Charles Batson.

At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Monday, March 11, North Zulch FFA’s Wool and Livestock judging teams demonstrated their skills. The wool team clinched second place overall with performances by Brayden S, who secured 11th place, and Jade S, who achieved 7th. The livestock team also showed skills during the rounds.

Fort Boggy State Park is hosting the 3rd Annual Glow in the Dark Snipe Egg Hunt for children 12 and under Saturday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event is FREE with park entrance.

Two wildfires that burned more than 1 million acres in the Panhandle were caused by downed power lines, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Juan Rodriguez, with the service, told the Texas Standard that its law enforcement investigators had concluded their probe into the source of the Smokehouse Creek and Windy Deuce fires.

Midway, located 11 miles east of Madisonville on Highway 21, had a post office in its area in 1846, before Madisonville was even a pipedream. Later, two schools were there, Midway Public School and Midway Colored School.
